dry lamination adhesive

Dry lamination adhesive is a key material used to bond multiple layers of films, foils, papers, and other substrates in flexible packaging and industrial laminates. In dry lamination, the adhesive is first applied to one substrate, dried in an oven to remove solvents or water, and then laminated to a second substrate under heat and pressure. This technology is widely used in food packaging, pharmaceutical packaging, personal care products, labels, and technical laminates. There are several main types of dry lamination adhesives. Solvent‑based polyurethane systems are commonly used when high performance is required, for example in retortable pouches, aggressive filling goods, or applications demanding excellent chemical and heat resistance. Solventless polyurethane adhesives are two‑component systems that do not contain solvents and are mixed in precise ratios before application. They are valued for low emissions, reduced energy consumption, and fast production speeds. Water‑based adhesive systems are also available, offering lower environmental impact and reduced flammability, and are often used for less demanding laminations such as snacks, dry foods, and some paper laminates.Key performance requirements for dry lamination adhesives include strong and durable bond strength, high transparency, and good aging resistance. The adhesive must wet the substrate surface effectively and maintain adhesion during converting, printing, filling, sealing, and distribution. It should exhibit good flexibility without cracking when the laminate is folded or creased. In packaging applications, resistance to contents such as oils, fats, alcohol, and other chemicals is critical. For food and pharmaceutical use, compliance with relevant regulations on migration, odor, and taste is essential. Low residual monomer content and carefully controlled curing reactions help ensure safety and minimize off‑flavor.Processability is another important aspect. The adhesive needs suitable viscosity for the chosen coating method, such as gravure or roller application, and stable behavior at production speeds that can exceed several hundred meters per minute. For solvent‑based systems, fast and complete drying is crucial to avoid solvent retention. Solventless systems require accurate mixing ratios and controlled temperature to ensure uniform coating and proper curing. The pot life and curing profile must be matched to the process conditions so that the laminate develops handling strength quickly, while final properties continue to build over several days.In recent years, there has been growing interest in more sustainable dry lamination adhesive technologies. Developments include high‑solid or solvent‑free formulations, water‑based systems with improved performance, and adhesives compatible with recyclable monomaterial structures. Research is also focusing on bio‑based raw materials and solutions that enable easier delamination or recycling at end of life. Through continued innovation in chemistry, processing, and regulation compliance, dry lamination adhesives will remain a central element in the design and performance of modern packaging and technical laminates.
